Hair loss is common in both men and women. These days even the children are getting hair loss. This has various reasons. If we see hair loss in the starting stage, then it is never too late to prevent it from increasing. Because when the hair loss is in its initial stage then it is easy to identify the cause and to cure it. Some of the major reasons for hair loss are stress and strain, genetic reasons, underlying disease, prolonged deficiency of some vitamins, disorder of thyroid hormone, side effects of chemotherapy, which is used to cure cancer and also exposure to certain toxic substances etc.
Hair loss in men occurs mostly due to genetic reasons. In a family, if a man has baldness then the son may also get bald over the years. This is called male pattern baldness. In men, baldness is more common than it is in women. Androgens, which are male hormones, shrink the hair follicles and thus it stops the hair sprout.
There is another type of hair loss in men. In this type, one patch of hair falls from the scalp. When this lost patch of hair grows again then another patch falls. There is no medicine or treatment for this problem. This type of hair loss gets automatically cured in a year. In women, hair loss occurs mostly because of nutritional deficiencies, exposure to toxins, hair styles that pull the hair strands and so on. There are many types of hair styles that exert pressure on the root of the hair and pull them out. This may permanently stop the hair growth in that region of the scalp.

Chemotherapy is a kind of treatment which is used to kill micro organisms or cancerous cells in cancer patients. Body cells of a cancer patient start breaking up very rapidly. Chemotherapy not only kills the cancerous _cells in the process of destroying the effected cells end up destroying cells of bone marrow, digestive tract and hair follicles.
Hair follicles grow very fast; this is the main reason why chemotherapy damages the hair follicles. Few chemo drugs cause temporary hair loss and few chemo drugs cause permanent hair loss. The body hair, hair on the scalp and eyebrows gets destroyed due to chemotherapy.
Hair loss can occur at any stage of the treatment during chemotherapy, hair can start falling in bunches during the initial days or weeks of the treatment. Hair can grow back once the treatment is stopped but the hair volume and texture will be completely different from the previous original volume and texture.
Patients can minimize the hair damage by using a cold cap on the scalp. This cap makes the scalp very cold, almost freezes the scalp. The blood does not circulate in this frozen area thus stopping blood from reaching the hair follicles. Few patients use these cold caps as it makes the scalp very cold and few may not use these caps as they find it difficult to tolerate such freezing coldness. Some of the chemotherapy drugs affect the hair follicles even if the patient is using cold cap.
There is no solution for hair loss due to chemotherapy. Hair-loss treatments do not help as the regrown hair will get destroyed during the next course of chemotherapy. So the best way out is to use a hair piece as we have custom made wigs to suit the texture and color of patients original hair.
